Tips & Tricks to Crack UGC NET Paper 1


Many of the aspirants have already started preparing for the UGC NET 2019. It is better we strategize our preparation during initial days itself. This way we will be able to complete out syllabus on time and can do enough practice without getting panicked during the last months.


In this article, I am going to sharing few tips and tricks to prepare for UGC NET Paper 1. but before that we should thoroughly understand the exam pattern and syllabus for UGC NET Paper 1.



Exam Pattern


This paper focuses on the Teaching & Research section and checks the teaching & research skills of the candidate.

Below is the UGC NET Paper 1 Pattern

  • Paper 1 Exam consists of 60 MCQs out of which 50 questions are compulsory.
  • Marking Scheme – each question carries 2 marks and the maximum marks for the exam is 100.
  • Minimum qualifying criteria to clear the exam is 40%, i.e., 40 marks out of 100 for General category.
  • The paper is divided into 10 sections, with 5 questions based on each section.

In case you attempt more than 50 questions, the first 50 questions attempted by you would be considered.

  • Thorough understanding of the paper
  • Try to answer 50 questions only. As I said in case you attempt more, first 50 will be evaluated.
  • This paper is common for all the subjects; hence the competition is really high.
  • Obviously note down the syllabus, as it will always be handy.
  • Start with making a rough plan to cover all the subjects. It is important to know the chapters.
  • Use proper method and studying pattern for maximum benefits.
  • Prepare a good study schedule in a way you can cover as many topics as possible.
  • Studying basic concepts of mass communication for the communication topic could really be helpful.
  • Every topic of Paper 1 is important as at least 5 questions are definitely asked from each topic.
  • Study Teaching and Research part in depth. It is an important topic.
  • Revision of basic mathematics concepts from class 10th is important, focus mainly on understanding sets/patterns and improve approximation techniques.
  • Data Interpretation is based on statistics, so you should start preparing with class 10th text books itself.
  • Reading and summarizing articles from newspaper is a good way of practising for reading comprehension.
  • Even ‘People and Environment’ topic should prepared be from class 10th books.
  • Give good time to both Information & Communication Technology and Higher Education System, as these topics are very heavy and should be prepared from UGC NET specific books.
  • A good way to prepare Information and Communication Technology is by using flash cards and charts. In this topics Definitions, abbreviations and terminology are very important.
  • Flowcharts should be used to prepare Higher Education System Governance, Polity and Administration topics.
  • Do thorough practice of previous 10-15 years question papers. It is the best and most effective way to prepare for any exam. It will give you the idea of questions that could be asked in the exam.
  • Solve as many Mock test Papers as possible. It is the most important thing to do for UGC NET Paper 1 exam preparation.
  • After solving the previous paper and mock papers, analyse your performance for the better picture of your preparation, so that you can improve your weak areas.
