Sounds scary right…can you imagine living without all that now?.. I can’t!

And studying without internet seems like nearly impossible task now.

India is developing economy and new India is full of technology. And it is still getting advance day by day. India loves the world of advancement and technology. It loves the age of internet. Especially the Youth India because it made life easy and advance.

For instance, internet made education easy for them. The traditional education system was hard…honestly.. I have studied by that traditional system and I know the difficulties I have faced. But with internet education has become easily accessible and manageable. Now you can read, learn anything you want, anytime, anywhere.

Online education started with filling online forms for various exams, jobs, etc. And now you can do a whole course and get certificate online itself... no need to go to colleges, institutes or anywhere… you can do it from your home, office, anywhere. By using internet, you can gain skills important for your work and not just the knowledge. You can do higher courses like MBA, MCA, etc., you can prepare for exams both UG level, PG level as well for job and international courses with going out of home.

  • India’s online education market is set to grow to USD 1.96 from USD 247 million in 2016. This increase in online education market is backed by rise in the paid user base for online education in India, which is expected to grow by CAGR of 44%, i.e., to 9.6 million users in 2021 from 1.6 million users in 2016. 
  • The growth of online education in India will be driven by combination of demand, supply and macroeconomic drivers:
  1. Cost of Online education: Online courses joined at UG or PG level are much more affordable than traditional programs.
  2. Young population: Nearly 46% of Indian population is between 15-40 age group. They are good target due to their high aspirations and lower income. Also, the acceptability of online channel is high in youths.
  3. Disposable income: it is expected that disposable income of India will increase by 55% by 2020. India will keep its current rank as the world’s second largest middle class till 2030.
  4. Internet penetration: India had an internet penetration of about 31%, i.e., 409 million internet users. It is predicted that by 2021, there will be nearly 735 million internet users in India, which will lead to increase in traffic for online education players.
  5. Smartphone user base: There are 290 million smartphone users in India and the user base is expected to grow with the addition of another 180 million new users by 2021.
  6. Government’s digital initiatives: Government’s recent initiatives such as Digital India is expected to strengthen the infrastructure needed by students to pursue education in online mode.
  7. Availability of quality education: There are areas in India where there is lack of quality offline education. For instance, states such Bihar, Kerala as well as Jammu and Kashmir account for about four lakh distance education enrolments.
  8. Employability quotient: It is expected that approx. 280million job seekers will enter the Indian job market by 2050. The unemployment rate in India at a 5 year high of around 5% in 2016.  
  • Industry view:
  1. Reskilling and online certifications is the largest category today at USD 93 million. 
  2. Primary and secondary supplemental education will be largest category by 2021 at USD 773 million, growing at a CAGR of 60%. 
  3. Test preparation will be the fastest growing category in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 64%.

In short, Online education plays a very important role in developing Indian education industry in terms of money as well as innovation. Most of the Indian population is using internet in a way or other. Online education gives freedom to students to develop skills just by sitting home at free of cost. Innovators and investors kept on looking for better opportunities in online education as it is a growing industry and have scope of improvement in India.
